– –   EAA92 October Meeting – –  HUGH COOK’S RV8 BUILD AND TEST FLIGHTS   – –

After 12 1/2 years and 2000+ man-hours, Hugh completed a Vans RV8 kit build (Slow build).  He built the airplane in his garage in Foothill Ranch, and finished it at Corona.  During the project he overhauled a Lycoming HO-360-B1B.  The test run on a calibrated dynamometer test cell verified 230 HP output.  Hugh has completed the Phase 1 fly-off, and it flies straight and meets expected performance parameters.

Join us as we hear all about his build process, the extra work that went in to souping-up the engine, and the test flight process.

ABOUT HUGH COOK:

Hugh Cook has five decades in aviation, from a line boy pumping gas in high school, to designing rockets and spaceships.  Currently held Certificates include AS/MEL, with an Instrument rating.

Airplanes owned: Cessna 150 (2), Piper J-3 Cub (2), Fleet Model 1, Cessna 172SP (partnership), and currently an RV8.

Hugh earned his PPL at Lake Wohlford near Escondido, CA, a 1400’ long gravel strip on a hilltop at 1600’ elevation. Interesting!  He owned, maintained, and flew a 1929 Fleet Model 1 biplane with a 125 HP Warner Scarab from the Washington D.C. area to the San Diego area by way of Oshkosh.  He has owned two Piper Cubs over a 20 year span with ~500 hours, ~1000 landings.  Hugh has flown lots of long cross countries including from near Wilmington, DE to Corona, CA.  Lots of adventures!

Hugh also accomplished a total restoration of a Piper Cub, involving a complete disassembly of airframe and engine, with inspect, repair, refurbish or replace as necessary.  Re-covered it using Ceconite/nitrate/butyrate, 13 coats, which took about four years and 1000 man hours.
