For our February EAA Chapter 92 meeting, please join us as we discuss First Flight Anomalies. 

As flight test teams approach first flights of their new aircraft incorporating new designs, it is often advantageous to review issues that other test projects had occur during their respective aircraft first flights. This presentation will take a historical perspective and review anomalies that occurred during the buildup and first flight execution of recent first flights of first article aircraft. Subjects addressed will include issues with telemetry, communications, foreign object damage and system malfunctions occurring during high speed taxi and actual first flights of new aircraft designs. Associated lessons learned will be presented.

• Military Test Pilot in E-3A AWACS, F-5 Spin tests, Air Launch Cruise Missile Development, Space Shuttle Handling qualities tests, Have Idea Special Projects, F-5 Air Demonstration Pilot, and USAF Test Pilot School Instructor

• 1982 joined Northrop Grumman as an Engineering Test Pilot

• Civilian Test Pilot for flight tests in F-5, F-20, QF-86, Sabreliner, G-II, King Air, Cessna 206, Cessna 208, Cessna O-2A, and Firebird test aircraft

• Backup test pilot for the YF-23

• Lead Test Pilot on RF-5E and F-5 Shaped Sonic Boom Demonstration tests

• Lead Unmanned Vehicle Operator for X-47A Pegasus and TSSAM flight tests

• Lead Test Pilot for Design of Command and Control Displays for X-47B UAV

• Lead Test Pilot for Firebird Optionally Piloted Aircraft tests

• Retired Northrop Grumman Chief Test Pilot and Flight Test Technical Fellow

• BS degree in Aerospace Engineering from Parks College of St. Louis University

• MS degree in Aero and Astro Engineering from Stanford University

• Former member of AIAA Flight Test Technical Committee

• Fellow and Past President of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots

• FAA ATP pilot license and Certified Flight Instructor (Multi-engine)

• FAA Class 2 Medical (dated June 2018)

• FAA Type Ratings: B707/720, Sabreliner, Lear Jet, GII, GIV, T-38 and F-5
