– – Off field landing on the way to Oshkosh with Ken Rubin – –

For our Oct EAA Chapter 92 meeting, join us as we ride along with Ken Rubin and a friend on a trip from the West Coast to AirVenture Oshkosh in 2023 in his V-Tail Bonanza. They had to make an off field landing, and  Ken has spent the last year learning to overcome trauma and get back to his passion, flying.

Among the lessons Ken learned from this experience, he will highlight the following:

  • Preflight planning / Weight and Balance
  • Alternates
  • Risk Management
  • Dangerous attitudes: Get-there-itis, It can’t happen to me, and Resignation
  • When to declare an emergency
  • Studying and practicing emergency procedures

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Ken Rubin grew up in New York and moved to California where he attended college at Long Beach State.  After graduation, he began his IT career and has been running his own IT business for the past 20 years. During that time Ken has provided IT support for countless small businesses and enterprises alike and was lead technician at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions for 2012 and 2016.  While mainly focusing his time on software development now, he has developed apps and extranets for companies across a wide variety of industries that include manufacturing companies that produce rocket ship parts for Blue Origin and SpaceX amongst others.

Ken started flying recreationally in 2017 and has logged over 600 hours in Cessnas and Bonanzas.  He received his instrument rating in 2021 and is currently working on his commercial license.  He is working towards becoming a CFI so he can teach private pilots after he retires from the IT world.  His goal is to help new pilots to develop their confidence, be as safe as possible and to establish good habits early on.

Ken currently owns a Cessna 182 and 1958 Bonanza J35 VTail which are both in Las Vegas where he relocated last year with his wife and children.
