Description:

ZENITH 601 BUILD AND FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM

with BRAD RAWLS

Every Amateur-Built aircraft and its builder have their own unique story - why build an airplane rather than buy? - why this particular aircraft model? - what were the customization choices along the way? - difficulties and surprises during the build? - what comes next?

Our own EAA Chapter 92 member, Brad Rawls, will share his story and building experiences at our EAA92 meeting on April 3.  Come hear his story - maybe you will be inspired to follow his path.

Brad started building his Zenith 601 XL in 2011 just before starting to take flying lessons.  He just finished the 601 XL last July, receiving his Airworthiness Certificate in August 2017, and is just about to complete his 40 hours of Phase 1 flight testing (.6 hours to go!)

The plane has a couple of unique features in that it is powered by a Honda derived 1.5 liter Viking Aircraft Engines motor, with fuel injection and electronic controls (FADEC), and it has been completely vinyl wrapped instead of painted. Brad did all the work on the plane himself with the exception of upholstering the seats and engine building. All the major components of the airplane were built in his home garage and transported to KCNO for final assembly.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Brad Rawls is currently the manager of our EAA Chapter 92 Builders Center at Chino Airport.  He got his PP license in 2013 after a couple of stop and go issues with his flying school.  He currently has about 250 hours and is signed off to fly Remos G3, Piper PA-28, Cessna 172, Zenith 601 and Cessna 162 Sky Catcher aircraft. He started building his Zenith 601 XL in 2011 just before starting to take flying lessons.
